¶ This short essay describes the inspiration for making a limited-edition of Gerard Manley Hopkins’s celebrated poem ‘Pied Beauty’ set in 18-line plain gothic wood type. The prospectus also includes a traditional ‘pretty little arrangement’ of the poem by way of contrast to the book.
Specifications: Typeset in Linotype Sabon, Linotype Walbaum and wood type. Printed in black on Zerkall mouldmade paper and in black, brown-green and blue on taupe-coloured Saint Armand Old Masters handmade paper. One sheet of Zerkall printed ‘four-up’, folded into a single signature and trimmed to 13.5 × 22.2 cm making eight pages; the slightly smaller insert is one sheet of Saint Armand Old Masters handmade paper printed ‘two-up’ and folded making four pages. Bound with a three-hole stitch in a black endsheet printed in opaque white, a black cover paper printed in opaque white and a brown Saint Armand Old Masters handmade paper wrapper printed in black. Issued in a paper envelope printed in black, brown and blue.
