Type Bountiful celebrates the present-day abundance of type and digital typographic tools by placing it into historical context, demonstrating how the mechanization of typesetting through the late 19th and early 20th centuries set the stage for the typographic plenitude of the digital era. Drawing upon three decades of experience working with many generations of typographic tools, the author provides a thumbnail history of type’s transition from handcraft to industrial to digital mode, comparing and contrasting various methods of type production and composition. At the heart of this story of technological change resides the enduring influence of human spirit.
