Short excerpts from CARL PURINGTON ROLLINS and ROCKY STINEHOUR

2026 / Limited Edition Chapbook / VH0037

¶ This chapbook reprints a short account on the merits of small printing offices by the American printer Carl Purington Rollins (b. 1880). Before he embarked upon his celebrated career at Yale University Press in 1918, during which he set new standards for excellence in American scholarly publishing, Carl Purington Rollins (1889–1960) spent a decade as the proprietor of a small rural printshop at Dyke Mill in Montague, Massachusetts.

A second short except from an essay by Rocky Stinehour (1925–2016) expresses a similar sentiment. Stinehour ran a more modernized rural printshop—yet still small and hands-on—in Lunenburg Vermont from 1953 until 2009. The Stinehour Press specialized in high quality book printing, and this remote shop produced many of the best-made American books of the late twentieth century.
